Chilean salmon association SalmonChile confirmed that all dead salmon from the massive February algae bloom have been safely dumped at sea. The association also confirmed a total loss of 106,000 tons of salmon from the bloom--equal to 12 percent of the country's annual production estimate for the year.
As of this week, all of the dead salmon have been removed from the affected pens. The salmon were dumped 75 miles offshore, which is standard practice under the London Protocol.
"In this process, no areas used by artisanal fisheries and indigenous communities affected," SalmonChile said. "These follow the same process of reduction and regular disposal of mortalities in accordance with health and environmental standards."
