Chile Has Lost at Least 24% of its Salmon Processing Workforce in Last Two Years

In the last two years, 2,606 salmon processing workers in Chile were laid off by producers including AquaChile, Multiexport, Australis Seafoods and Camanchaca, according to public information submitted to the Superintendency of Securities and Insurance (SVS).
Since 2014, Chile’s salmon processing workforce has declined from 13,303 workers to 10,697 workers. The steep decline has been blamed on consolidation within the industry and more recently, because of impacts from the severe algae bloom at the beginning of 2016.
At AquaChile, for example, its workforce has declined 30 percent since December 2015. The company’s employment has dropped from 5,290 workers to 3,659 employees...
