Oyster Recovery Partnership to plant 150 Million Oysters in Chesapeake Bay

BALTIMORE (WBFF) – A program that collects and recycles oyster shells gathered a record-breaking volume from nearly 300 restaurants, bars, markets and seafood suppliers in the Chesapeake Bay area last year. The non-profit Oyster Recovery Partnership collected 30,200 bushels of oyster shells, highlighting local businesses’ efforts to pitch in and help restore the area’s local mollusk population. Plus, the businesses and individuals who participate can receive a tax credit and avoid waste collection fees from taking shells to landfills.
Using these recycled shells, the Oyster Recovery Partnership and the UMD Center for Environmental Science’s Horn Point Laboratory Oyster Hatchery in Cambridge, can produce baby "spat" oysters. Each shell allows up to 10 larval oysters to grow and attach to the...
