Japan Becomes Signatory of Anti-IUU Treaty; Pledges to Eliminate Illegal Fishing Activities

The Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA)—an international treaty aimed at eliminating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing—took effect for Japan on June 18, 2017, after the government inked formal signature. The agreement itself went into force in June 2016.
It is an issue of paramount importance for Japan, a major fishing country and a massive consumer of fish, to work toward eradication of IUU fishing, which diminishes the effectiveness of conservation of fishery resources, and to ensure sustainable use of marine stocks. ...
