A Pink Surge, Plus More Chums Than Predicted Bring Harvest Total So Far to 133 Million Salmon

Some may remember this salmon season as the Year of the Dog (salmon), six months before the real Year of the Dog comes in the Chinese calender.
Chum salmon, sometimes called dogs because of the long canines that develop as they reach spawning age, have shown up in strong numbers throughout the state, particularly in in Prince William Sound, where landings are at 5 million and still counting.
Statewide forecasts for chum harvests were estimated to be 17 million earlier this year. As of August 4, over 18.1 chum salmon have been harvested.
Overall salmon catches are at 132.8 million statewide compared...
