Alaska Salmon Landings Exceed ADF&G 2017 Forecast

It hasn’t been easy, but sometime in the last day or so, landings of Alaska salmon surpassed the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s pre-season forecast of 204.3 million fish.
So while the rest of country enjoys the holiday weekend that marks the end of summer and celebrates the social and economic achievements of American workers, Alaskan fishermen, processors, and management biologists can give themselves a collective pat on the back for a job well done.
Now to the numbers. It wouldn’t have happened without Bristol Bay. An over-the-top ten million additional sockeye swam into the nets this year, upsetting ADF&G’s prediction by the widest margin of all.
But the Alaska Peninsula can take a few bows, too. Seven million more pinks than were predicted, returned to the South Peninsula district. And five million more sockeyes...
