Chilean BioTech Company TerraVia Will Get GAA's Innovation Award for Algae Based Omega-3 Salmon Feed

The winner of this years Global Aquaculture Alliance Innovation Award, usually given on the final day of the GOAL meerting, is a Chilean Biotech company called TerraVia. Dr. Walter Rakitsky, senior VP for emerging business, who will receive the award, commented that the company's algae based salmon feed, AlgaPrime is an expression that aquaculture is the "most responsible way to produce protein for a growing global population."
AlgaPrime is a microalgae ingredient that contains the long chain omega-3 fatty acid (docosahexaenoic acid). When added to salmon feed it reduces the need for fish meal and oil, which allows salmon producers to reduce their net fish utilization to below 0.5:1. This means that salmon producers can be a net provider of fish protein.
