Western Australia Fisheries Crack Down on Black Market, with Seafood Sold to Restaurants for Half Price

FISHERIES officers are blitzing one restaurant or seafood outlet every day in WA to crack down on the trade in illegal seafood.
High-value stocks including rock lobster, abalone, marron, dhufish, pink snapper and Spanish mackerel are leading the black market trade — in some cases sold for less than half the retail price, with big savings for restaurants but big risks for diners.
That’s despite fines up to $400,000 and four years’ jail for catching or selling seafood illegally. Offenders can also be banned from fishing and have their fishing equipment, vehicles and vessels confiscated.
