MSC Criticized by Conservation Groups Challenging Certification of Some Lobster and Trap Fisheries

The MSC announced changes to its standards last week that would disentangle certified and uncertified fisheries in instances where an operator of a certified fishery is also catching non-certified fish during the same trip. The premier example of this was the PNA tuna fishery, where MSC certified the fishery on free swimming tuna, but not on tuna caught using fish aggregating devices. The Board approved a change to standards that in the future, when fully implemented, would no longer allow this practice.
