DFO Announces Right Whale Closures in Southern Gulf Crab Fishery to Begin April 28th

Canadian Fisheries Minister Dominic LeBlanc announced that a closure will be implemented in the crab fishery in the Gulf of St. Lawrence where whales were observed last year, effective April 28th. It is not yet known how large an area will be affected by the initial closure.
Beyond the initial closed area, other areas in the Gulf may be closed for 15 days when whales are observed in an area. The closures will be extended until two overflights have established that there are no longer whales in the particular area.
The Southern Gulf crab fishery will be opened as early as possible. Forecasts indicate good conditions for ice break up and movement, and this will be assisted by the Canadian coast guard. The goal is to get the season open as quickly after April 1st as possible.
All fishing licenses will be able to start fishing immediately once the season is opened. Staggered openings...
