Canadian hunters asked to confirm there is a seal market this year as season starts Monday

With 400,000 harp seals as their quarry, and a herd estimated at 7.4 million animals on the ice floes off Newfoundland and in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the much maligned annual Canadian seal hunt will be underway on Monday.
Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) personnel met with industry represntatives on April 11 to set Monday , April 14 .The DFO Notice to Mariners advises "....Newfoundland and Labrador seal harvesters based in Sealing Areas 4 to 8 and 12 " could start taking harp seals at 6:00AM.
This is the area off northern Newfoundland known as "The Front." The Notice to Mariners also set the same opening for sealers in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
