Ireland's organic labeling for farmed salmon formally challenged against EU standards

The Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT) has lodged a formal complaint with the Department of Agriculture about the use of organic labelling on salmon farmed in Ireland.
The conservation group claims salmon reared on farms off the Atlantic coast should not be described as organic because they are fed on food made from fish which are not harvested in a sustainable fashion.
Padraic Fogarty of the IWT said there was no evidence that any Irish fish farm was entitled to claim its product is organic. "We do not believe farmed salmon can be considered organic under current EU regulations, and take issue with these claims," he said.
