Gulf shrimp industry begins to think about the end of the limited entry permit moratorium
SEAFOODNEWS.COM April 24, 2014
The Gulf shrimp industry is beginning to look at three proposals before the Gulf Fishery Management council that will address the expiration of the current shrimp limited entry permit moratorium in 2016. The ten year moratorium was put in place in 2006.
Each of the proposals could impact shrimpers in different ways. An end to the moratorium would expand the fleet, and possibly lead to higher landings overall; continuation of limits and action on latent permits might lead to more targeting of higher value shrimp by size, and possibly more money for exisitng shrimpers, while the third proposal would look at the issue of latent or unused permits, and possibly lead to more rationalizing or downsizing of the fleet, and consequently higher revenues per exisitng vessel.
