Plankton bloom kills off 40,000 farmed Atlantic salmon at Grieg's Vancouver Island operation

A plankton bloom has killed more than 40,000 farmed Atlantic salmon in Grieg Seafood pens near Gold River on Vancouver Island.
The naturally occurring bloom arrived in mid-June, said Stewart Hawthorn, Grieg Seafood B.C. Inc. managing director.
Certain types of plankton are deadly to salmon. In this case, the bloom has now abated and the fish are feeding again and will be harvested as planned, he said. The bloom killed about seven per cent of the 625,000 fish at two farms, he said. That works out to 43,750 fish...
