With the growth of the foodservice sector in China, reporters are acting as watchdogs and following up consumer complaints. Here is one story of a restaurant re-using scallop and oyster shells, with frozen meats, and passing them off as fresh. The reporter says the price differential is almost ten to 1 for the "assembled" product vs. the actual shellfish.
Scallop and oyster shells are found to be filled with frozen meat in Qingdao, Shandong and the seafood price may be the reason for this dirty trick.
