Rabobank: 30-40 million tonnes more seafood needed to meet global demand by 2030

The rising popularity of seafood will lead to the need for an estimated 30 to 40 million tonnes of extra seafood globally to meet consumer demand by 2030, according to a new report by agribusiness banking specialist Rabobank.
Chinese consumption of seafood is forecast to reach 37.7kg per person this year, up 57 per cent from 2000. “Most Chinese seafood consumption is still based on low-value domestically raised product, but more significant is the expected growth in demand for higher-end seafood products, many of which will need to be imported,” Matt Costello, an animal protein analyst, said.
The report, co-authored by Rabobank’s Gorjan Nikolik, said global growth in seafood consumption was driven by factors such as perceived health and wellbeing benefits and a rise in the popularity of seafood-rich Asian cuisine...
