Thad Cochran, appropriations Chairman, and Richard Shelby, of Alabama, chair of the Commerce Justice and Science subcommittee, confirmed that they added language to the appropriations bill to make shrimp subject to the Seafood Import Monitoring Program. The appropriations bill was passed by the full committee yesterday.
Meanwhile, Texas shrimpers are struggling with a lack of crew, as visa applications are stuck in the pipeline. A Brownsville shrimp boat owner said he's losing thousands of dollars every day in the industry.
