Tally’s New Zealand Gets its Purse Seine Skipjack Certified by MSC

Another small purse seine skipjack tuna fishery is now MSC certified. Tally is one of New Zealand’s major fishing companies with both inshore and offshore fisheries, selling New Zealand seafood products. In addition to Tally’s, they sell their offshore frozen at Sea production under the Amaltal Brand.
The New Zealand fishery averages a bit over 11,000 tons annually, and represents about 0.5% of the Western Central Pacific tuna catch.
As retailers have begun to demand MSC certified tuna, there has been considerable pressure to certify high volume tuna fisheries. Currently 4 purse seine fisheries are in assessment, and two have been certified. However, volumes of certified skipjack remain very small..
