Minister Lebouthillier Launches Investigation Into Arrest Of Mi’kmaq Men Elver Fishing
Dianne Lebouthillier, the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, confirmed on Monday that the Canadian government will be launching a “comprehensive external review” into a March 2024 incident involving fisheries officers who arrested two Mi’kmaq men for elver fishing.
Minister Lebouthillier made the decision to close the elver fishery for the 2024 season in early March. The decision was based on challenges for the fishery, like illegal harvesting, but also acts of violence between harvesters and fishery officers.
