OPINION: Taxpayer Money Should Not Be Subsidizing Foreign Shrimp
Forbearance, guts, daring. It takes that and more, a lot more, to be a commercial shrimper, and even more so these days with all the government regulations and endless stream of cheap imports, not to mention the increased costs of fuel and labor.
Just think, at the turn of the century, Georgia issued 523 commercial trawl licenses to shrimpers for the privilege of trawling state waters. Twenty-three years later, in 2023, Georgia issued only 184 licenses. That's some drop —a 65% plunge, to be more precise.
