Ecuador Launches Sustainable Shrimp Partnership Modeled after the Global Salmon Initiative

At the Seafood Expo North America this week, Seven major Ecuador shrimp producers launched a new NGO, called Sustainable Shrimp Partnership. Membership is open to any Latin American shrimp producer who can meet standards in 3 areas.
-Zero Antibiotics
-Full Transparency from Farm to Consumer
-Neutral Impact on Water Quality, with effluent as good or better than water intake.
The Ecuadorian trade commissioner based in New York, Karina Amaluisa, said the program was partly designed to differentiate Ecuador shrimp from that produced in India.
Ecuador producers are seeing more price competition from Indian shrimp both in China and other markets. The idea of the SSP certification is to build a ‘country brand’ for Ecuador ..
