Gulf of Mexico Dead Zone Bigger Than Connecticut, But Smaller Than Largest Zone Measured in 2017

The dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico will be approximately the size of the state of Connecticut. NOAA scientists are forecasting the area to reach approximately 5,780 square miles this summer. Connecticut is 5,543 miles.
While the size sounds a bit frightening, it’s actually smaller than the Gulf dead zone last year. In 2017 the dead zone in the area was 8,776 square miles – the largest dead zone measured since mapping began in 1985 ...
