Haines, Alaska Hit By Record-Breaking Storm; Floods and Landslides Leave Six Missing
After two days of relentless rain and wind that triggered a devastating series of landslides, the northern Southeast Alaska town of Haines is still in emergency mode. Yesterday, the largest landslide — estimated at 600 feet across — slid four houses down the slope across Beach Road and into Lynn Canal, a deep fjord that extends 100 miles south to the state capital of Juneau.
Mayor Douglas Olerud described some of the calamity that hit the small town in Tuesday's Declaration of a State of Emergency.
