Despite a Return to Cooler Water, Bering Sea Snow Crab Numbers Lowest in Fifty Years
NOAA Fisheries released a draft Technical Memorandum last Friday with results of this summer’s survey in the Bering Sea on crab stocks. Abundance estimates for mature male snow crab dropped 22% from last year’s low and is now the lowest in 50 years. Female snow crab abundance is estimated at 33% lower than last year, marking the third lowest in that time. Total adult snow crab abundance is now less than one-third of the previous 20-year average.
