Mi’kmaw Chiefs Looking for Options A Month Before Elver Season
The Mi'kmaw Chiefs are frustrated with Diane Lebouthillier, Canada's Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. The Chiefs sent her a proposal to manage the lucrative 2024 elver fishery that would include monitoring total allowable catches, enhancing traceability using GPS, and other components to responsibly manage the fishery. To date, they have heard nothing from the minister on that. They have heard, as others did when the letter went public, that Lebouthillier announced on February 13 that the fishery should be closed in 2024.
