Salmon Count on Fraser River Closely Monitored Following Landside and Flood
Sockeye salmon returning to their spawning grounds in the Fraser River watershed this summer were hit by a massive landslide on July 31 in the Chilcotin River, which lowered water levels downstream for a week. A devastating flood followed on August 5 when the natural dam created by the landslide over the Chilcotin was breached. The debris and mudflow roared 20 miles to the confluence of the Fraser and then another 400 miles south and west, reaching the ocean on August 9.
