Nova Scotia fishermen at odds with DFO policies that prevent green crab exports to overseas markets
Russell Nickerson has been fishing for more than 50 years. The 67-year-old is credited with spearheading the green crab fishing industry, selling the crustaceans as lobster bait and trying to export them to Asian and European markets where they are a common menu item.
However, Nickerson said he’s been thwarted by red tape every step of the way.
The Port Joli fisherman first came across green crab while fishing for eel, something he turned to when swordfish, tuna or halibut catches were low. But instead of eel, he pulled up traps full of green crabs.
