NOAA Establishes Voluntary Speed Restriction Zone South of Nantucket After Right Whale Sighting
NOAA Fisheries has established a voluntary vessel speed restriction zone (Dynamic Management Area) south of Nantucket following the sighting of 100 North Atlantic right whales.
The right whales are currently migrating along the Atlantic coast and were spotted on January 15. With a combined 20 right whale deaths documented in 2017 and 2018, NOAA is “cautioning boaters to give these endangered whales plenty of room as they migrate south.” There are only a reported 411 North Atlantic right whales left in the world...
