FDA Approves AquaBounty GMO Salmon for Sale in US

On Friday the FDA announced it was removing the 2016 import alert that prohibited genetically engineered salmon from entering the US.
AquaBounty has developed a process involving inserting genes from Chinook salmon and Ocean Pout to bypass the normal growth regulators in Atlantic salmon. The result is a fish that grows to market size about 50% faster than traditionally reared Atlantic Salmon.
This GMO salmon is the first genetically engineered animal product the FDA has approved for food consumption. Its many detractors call it ‘frankenfish’.
