Interim Bottomfish Measure Addresses Overfishing, Allows American Samoa Fishery to Operate
Both Pacific islands fishermen and bottomfish species need help -- and the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council promised to provide assistance.
The National Marine Fisheries Service provided a draft bottomfish stock assessment to the Council when it met last week in American Samoa. The new assessment showed the bottomfish complex in American Samoa is both overfished and experiencing overfishing. In Guam, the complex is considered overfished but not experiencing overfishing.
