U.S. Troops Deployed to Remote Aleutian Island In Response to Heightened Military Activity in Area

About 130 troops have arrived in Shemya Island, part of the western tip of the Aleutian Island Archipelago, in response to increased activity by Russian and Chinese military exercises in the region.

Shemya Island is home to the COBRA DANE radar system, operated by the United States Space Force, used for tracking ballistic missiles and other weapons and spacecraft.
