New Zealand First to Adopt the Hookpod, Saving Hundreds of Thousands of Seabirds
Described as “magnificent ocean wanderers” the Campbell Albatross is one of scores of large ocean seabird species that are vulnerable to pelagic longline gear in the world’s oceans. An estimated 300,000 seabirds are killed each year by pelagic longlines globally.
Hookpods can stop this, says their Devon, England manufacturer, and others, including environmental advocate Sir David Attenborough. The invention won the Marsh Award for Innovative Ornithology and the Ocean Award for Innovation through Boat International and Blue Marine in 2018.
