Weakened, Thin North Atlantic Right Whale Entangled Off Nantucket
More bad news about North Atlantic right whales broke over the weekend. NOAA announced that an aerial survey team spotted an emaciated North Atlantic off the coast of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts on February 24.
“Dragon,” a 19-year-old breeding female was traveling with a group of right whales with its mouth ajar. The whale was not feeding and the survey team from NOAA Fisheries Northeast Fisheries Science Center spotted emaciation, a light skin tone, whale lice and buoy and rope entanglements.
