Sectors Clash on King Crab Protections in Bering Sea, Crabbers Say Council Action “Not Enough”
Tempers flared at the recent North Pacific Fisheries Management Council meeting as crabbers pushed to get the pollock fleet constrained from fishing in known areas where Bristol Bay Red King Crab (BBRKC) are mating or molting. Stakeholders in favor of further constraints in these areas pointed to “new” information in the Council’s latest discussion paper that stated “actual bottom contact [for pollock catcher vessel’s trawls] would be estimated at a value between 20% and 60% of the raw area swept …”
