Legislation to Phase Out Drift Gillnets in Federal Waters to Become Law

U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) announced that legislation that will lead to the phase out of drift gillnet usage in federal waters will be signed into law as part of a 2023 omnibus government funding bill.
The bill, Driftnet Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act, focuses on large mesh drift gillnets, between a mile and a mile-and-a-half long that regularly entangle marine species including whales, dolphins, sea lions, sea turtles, fish and sharks according to Feinstein’s office.
