North Atlantic Right Whale Surveyors Found a Surprise Off Cape Cod
In a rare and unexpected discovery, researchers from Provincetown on April 17 were the first to spot a previously unknown North Atlantic right whale calf in Cape Cod Bay, bringing the total count of the 2024-2025 calving season to 11.
Unlike most calves, which are first seen during the winter calving season off southeastern U.S. shores, the calf from April 17 and its mother, a whale named Monarch, had gone undetected — around 1,000 miles north of where the species typically gives birth.
