Mexican Aquaculture Farmers in Trouble
The drought has hit Mexico's aquaculture activity very hard.
In 2023, according to figures from Conapesca, total national aquaculture production fell by around 8%, partly attributed to the drought. Preliminary assessments for 2024 and so far in 2025 indicate that results in this period will increase significantly.
However, health risks are the worst part of the crisis. Water stress reduces water oxygenation and favors the proliferation of pathogens and diseases, affecting the health of cultivated species.
