Ancud Bay Committee Advances Five Temporary Reserve Zones for Benthic Resources
The Management Committee of the Benthic Fisheries of the Bay of Ancud is advancing a plan to establish five temporary reserve zones under Chile’s new Law No. 21,651 of 2024, known as the Benthic Law, in a move described as pioneering at the national level.
The zones would temporarily restrict extractive activity on benthic resources while allowing research, monitoring and other justified management actions, with the goal of helping recover seabed species such as commercially important invertebrates and algae.
