California Considers Delay in Dungeness Crab Season due to High Levels of Domoic Acid

The warm water blob off the West Coast may create problems for the dungeness crab fishery this year.
In August, Washington state officials closed the crab fishery due to high levels of domoic acid, a toxin produced by algal blooms. There is a large algal bloom associated with the warm water blob that is being slow to dissipate.
Tests done in California have not shown much decrease in toxin levels.
The state action levels are at a finding of 33 parts per million in the viscera, and 20 parts per million in meat.
In some tests in September, samples tested over this level for both meat and viscera.
