Dispute Arises over Norway Study of Salmon Benefits

A study undertaken by the Norwegian Fisheries and Aquaculture Industry Research Fund has been attacked by those saying the salmon used in the study are not the same as purchased in stores.
The study is an update to a 2006 study that helped form the basis of the Norwegian recommendation that pregnant women should eat salmon, and rebutted charges that high levels of pollutants, such as dioxins, were present at levels that were of concern.
Russia, as part of its campaign against Norwegian salmon, has often charged that it has high levels of dioxins and pollutants.
That was not the issue in the large-scale research project, which, according to the Norwegian broadcaster NRK, involves feeding large numbers of grade school and high school children in Germany a diet high in salmon, and measuring whether this improves their school results..
