With Prices Lower, Japanese King Crab Buyers Still Expect Strong Competition for Supplies

King crab was discussed at the annual Tokyo Wholesalers meeting in October where participants give their outlook on the upcoming holiday season sales.
The dealers reported that they expect about 6,000 to 7,000 tons of sections to be produced from Russia, including both the Barents Sea and the Far East.
China is increasingly buying live king crab. The dealers expect that of 10,000 tons quota in Western Kamchatka, the Chinese will take about 6,000 tons. They expect this level of Chinese buying to continue.
Recently there have been some suggestions of further quota increases in Kamchatka due to good recruitment.
At the Busan auctions, frozen section prices are currently between $15.80 and $16.30 per lb....
