Aquaculture not in New Canadian Fisheries Plan, But LeBlanc Calls for Scientific Transparency

Although Aquaculture is not addressed in the new Canadian Fisheries Act, Fisheries Minister LeBlanc was asked about it at his news conference in Vancouver, introducing the bill.
Salmon aquaculture sites have been subject to an ongoing attack in BC by anti-farming activists, with First Nations on both sides of the issue.
LeBlanc said there needs to be greater transparancy around fish farms.
“I have said publicly to the aquaculture industry that they need to raise their game,” he said.
He said the government will demand more transparency around things like scientific assessments when it comes to aquaculture.
LeBlanc added his government has asked its chief science adviser to assemble a panel of experts to examine how science informs decisions around aquaculture...
