Researchers Develop Method to Breed Moreton Bay Bugs Commercially in Tasmania

The Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies’ research on hatchery techniques for bay lobsters – or Moreton Bay bugs – has paid off. Associate professor Greg Smith, the director of the ARC Research Hub for Commercial Development of Rock Lobster Culture Systems, announced that techniques developed for tropical rock lobsters has successfully been applied to Moreton Bay bugs. Thanks to the research, Tasmania will be able to have their very own Moreton Bay buy hatchery.
