NOAA Updates North Atlantic Right Whale UME With Recent Cases From Canadian Waters
NOAA Fisheries has updated its Unusual Mortality Event (UME) for North Atlantic right whales (NARW) to include some recent cases that occurred in Canadian waters.
In 2017 a total of 35 North Atlantic right whales were either killed or seriously injured, prompting NOAA to declare an Unusual Mortality Event. Since the UME was declared, mortalities and injuries have fluctuated, but never came close to the 35 that were documented in 2017.
