ANALYSIS: Stone Crab Season Opens With Initial Low Landings
The 2017 season started a month after Hurricane Irma crossed the Florida Keys, eventually making landfall further up the west coast and hitting two of the state’s largest stone crab producing regions. Luckily, most traps avoided destruction and initial landings were strong. Many attributed the strong landings to the hurricane churning the water and making it cloudy, which gives protection to the crabs as they search for food.
