Maine’s Department of Marine Resources is currently dealing with a bloom of phytoplankton Karenia mikimotoi, which may not be a threat to human health, but can have a harmful effect on finfish, shellfish and other marine organisms. The specific species of phytoplankton is blooming in the Casco Bay region of the state and can create an anoxic (low oxygen) environment.
