California Wetfish Group Tells Council Sardine Assessment is Badly Flawed

The Pacific Fishery Management Council will discuss sardine stock assessments at its meeting this week. The 2018 official assessment estimated that the sardine stock biomass has declined 97% since 2006.
However, the California Wetfish Association says that survey is highly flawed.
“Fishermen are seeing more sardines, not less, especially in nearshore waters. And they’ve been seeing this population spike for several years now,” said Diane Pleschner-Steele, executive director of the California Wetfish Producers Association (CWPA) ...
