NMFS Rejects Maine’s Right Whale Protection Plan, Additional Measures to be Taken
The State of Maine’s proposed North Atlantic right whale protection plan doesn’t adequately address the reduction of entanglements, the National Marine Fisheries Service said in a letter to Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR) Commissioner Patrick Keliher in January.
The NMFS said that Maine’s plan only reduces the risk of entanglement by 52%, rather than the 60% reduction goal stated in the Take Reduction Team (TRT) agreement.
