Japanese Environment Ministry to Designate Four Marine Protected Areas for the First Time
For the first time, the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) will designate four sea areas, including the Izu-Ogasawara Trench area, as "offshore submarine natural environment conservation areas" regulating fishing and mineral mining. The purpose is to conserve rare creatures living in the deep sea. When conducting bottom trawling in the protected area, a new notification to the ministry is required. MOE will designate the areas within the year.
