Chile Brings Fisheries Sector into Early Talks on High Seas Treaty Implementation
Chile’s fisheries authority is taking part in the country’s early discussions on implementing the BBNJ Agreement, or High Seas Treaty, signaling that fisheries governance will be a key part of how the pact is rolled out domestically.
The Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) recently participated in a national workshop tied to the treaty’s ratification and implementation. For seafood industry stakeholders, the main takeaway is that Chile is aiming to integrate the agreement with existing fisheries management systems, including regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs), rather than build a separate framework around it.
